Interview With Rixton For Altsounds

Before releasing their debut EP “Me And My Broken Heart”, Rixton began releasing covers of songs on YouTube including “Ignition” by R Kelly and “How We Do (Party)” by Rita Ora. The band kicked off a headline UK tour in October with a number of shows still to go, with the last show being in Cardiff.

They were also nominated for 4 teen choice awards this year for catergories such as Choice Music Group and Breakout Group. Rixton are set to support Ariana Grande on The Honey Moon tour which kicks off in Missouri on the 25th February 2015.

Thanks to Rixton for taking the time to chat to Altsounds where we discuss their upcoming debut album ‘Let The Road’, working with producer Benny Blanco on the album, advice and much more.

Altsounds: What were your first impressions of each other?

Danny: We got along great! That’s why we all became a band. We could all sit around and talk as friends and that’s what still holds the band together now!

Altsounds: If you were not in the band and were a fan of the band, who would be your favourite member of Rixton?

Danny: I don’t think I can pick a favourite member. Charley’s guitar solos are insane, Jake is an amazing lead singer with a great voice, and Lewi’s beats are awesome and hold a live performance together!

Altsounds: Your debut album ‘Let The Road’ is set for release on 01/06/15 which features the singles ‘Me And My Broken Heart’ and ‘Wait On Me’. What can fans expect from the album?

Danny: The album has been a very long process, the title track “Let the Road” was written 6 years ago by Jake and I and we hold it very close to our hearts. There’s something on there for everyone and I hope everyone enjoys it!

Altsounds: What was it like working with producer Benny Blanco on the album known to have worked with artists such as Gym Class Heroes & Britney Spears?

Danny: He’s known as “the 5th member” of Rixton, he’s so much fun and is the soul behind the whole album. We all had exactly the same vision for the album and that’s what made the process run so smoothly. He’s a great guy!

Altsounds: You are set to open The Honeymoon tour for Ariana Grande in the US next year. What are you looking forward to on this tour?

Charley: The main thing is having this great opportunity to play in front of a brand new audience and to have the freedom of playing on a big stage. We can’t wait to play these very prestigious venues and just to really enjoy ourselves.

Altsounds: Was there any piece of advice in particular that has stuck with you before starting the band in order to get to where you are today?

Charley: Stay committed. We’ve all been doing this for a long time, I’ve been in bands for 12 years now and for me it’s all about working hard and being nice to people. You never know what’s going to happen in this industry so you have to respect everyone who’s working for you, with you and all your fans who come to your shows, as they are the people who make you.

What is one thing that you have learnt as a band or individually on tour that can be applied to life in general?

Charley: Just enjoy life and don’t take it too seriously!

What does a typical ‘day in the life of’ Rixton include?

Charley: Promo, promo then more promo. It’s all about getting out there. Then we play shows!

Individually or as a band, do you believe that the music you grew up listening to has played a part in terms of song writing and live performance?

Jake: Absolutely. Especially our live shows. I think it’s because we’re all influenced by different artists individually and they all play a huge part in our sound. In terms of writing, we’re just huge fans of big pop melodies and RnB music.

What songs were your favourite to cover and why?

Jake: I loved covering R Kelly’s Ignition. It was my favourite song growing up. And it gives me a reason to sing ‘rubbing her hands through my fro’

For anyone who wants to check out your music, where can they go to do so?

Jake: Get yourself down to a show. We’ll try not to mess up too much and you’ll leave with a smile on your face. (We can’t promise the smile. If you leave unhappy we will refund your ticket).

Plans for the rest of 2014?

Jake: We’ve just kicked off our UK tour so we’re gonna finish this then head back to the US for some very big and exciting shows.

Any final words for your fans?

Jake: Just thank you thank you thank you. I can’t tell you much it means to see you all singing along to our songs at our shows and just letting yourself go. Thanks for your continued support and we’ll no doubt see you very soon.
